San Francisco Night Shots

While in San Francisco recently I quite randomly drove off a freeway offramp and ended up at the northern edge of the Golden Gate Bridge, somewhere near (or in?) Fort Baker. I didn’t have my tripod (naturally) so I sat my camera down wherever I could and snapped off a couple of long exposure shots. My favorite, below, was quite accidental, and I’m sure if I tried to recreate it I’d fail.

I had not yet found a solid structure, and was finding it difficult to hold the camera steady. Somehow, I managed to rotate the camera up and/or down, but in a jerky motion. Serendipity! I find it very “satisfying”, and it will be interesting to me to see if that feeling holds over time, or if in a year I think, “That’s just a blurry picture!”

At the same location, at the end of the pier, a family was setting up for what I imagine to be a night of fishing. I liked the juxtaposition of the family with the city skyline and the Golden Gate, and tried to capture it from a number of vantage points.

For a random, unplanned hour of shooting, I’m quite happy with some of the photos.
