Wild Ponies of Assateague

The ponies of Assateague – to the best of my knowledge, pronounced assateek – are the big draw when camping at Assateaque National Park. When you first see them as you drive across the Verrazano bridge, you imagine majestic wild horses splashing through the waters, running wild across the sand dunes. They lose their majesty when you see one eating the sandwich rolls from the back of your car.

Still, they are a sight to behold. And it is wonderful to wake up at the crack of dawn and hear the neighs among the chirping birds. That first evening, setting up the tent, was when I had the best look at them. Perfect light, with a stiff breeze blowing across their manes.
