By pure chance I happened upon a wonderful little pond nearby, just off a major highway, that attracts dozens of great egrets. It’s perfectly situated so that in the evening, when they all float in, the light hits them from across the water. The location couldn’t be more fantastic. My lens has died on me (the auto-focus no longer works), so until that is fixed I must sit and hope for them to remain.
There is nothing special about shooting these majestic birds. They don’t seem particularly afraid of me, or even notice my presence (I’m usually about 100 feet away). They sit still — especially when hunting for fish. The only thing I’ve noticed is that I need to set my EV compensation to -0.3 to -0.7. Otherwise, the detail on the birds get washed out. Here are just a few of the many hundreds of pictures I’ve taken this past week.
