Snowmass Rodeo, 2012

Ah, another skipped conference banquet, and another evening at the Snowmass Rodeo. My last visit two years ago produced some great shots, including this shot that appeared in National Geographic Traveler (It’s also my mom’s favorite photo of mine). My biggest problem last time was lack of light after the sun set over the mountains. Even at high ISO, I simply couldn’t stop the action, so wasn’t able to capture the later events — including the bull riding. This time I brought my f/2.8 105mm prime lens, which was beautifully fast. I did find myself too close at times, and rather than move further back, which for some reason didn’t occur to me, I focused on particular parts of the event: the animal’s face, the cowboy, etc. It worked well for the shot at left, and the one below

As usual, the highlight of the evening was the sheep riding, with the donkey race a close second.
