Northern Flicker

This pair of Northern Flickers was hopping around the Audubon Sanctuary on Marblehead Neck this past spring. The one on the left was quite persistent in its courtship, which involved a rapid bobbing up and down followed by raising of the beaks. Fun to watch.

It was cloudy, hence the colors are washed out a bit. Beautiful birds, nonetheless.

Update: According to my bird book, these are both males (the black mustache is the distinguishing mark). Not sure what they were doing!
